The Trouble

Primary Amyloidosis is a disease caused by the abnormal accumulation of protein molecules in body tissues. These proteins are fragments of immunoglobulin (antibody) molecules which are normally present in the blood to give protection against bacteria and other infectious agents. Normally, antibody molecules are constantly being synthesized by cells of the immune system and then, after a finite life span, degraded so that there is a balance between production and degradation. In this way our active immune system protects our bodies from a constantly changing array of infectious bacteria and viruses. In primary amyloidosis a defect occurs in the immune system. Excessive amounts of certain antibody molecules are produced and fragments of these molecules get deposited in tissues. These tissue deposits, as they enlarge, damage normal tissues and cause the disease that we know as primary amyloidosis.

There now follows two animations describing how amyloid forms in the body

Animation 1 (Brief description of Amyloid formation) (Duration 23 secs)

Animation 2 (Detailed description of Amyloid formation) (Duration 12 min-40secs)

This Amyloid Video contains Professor Jullian Gilmour from UCL Hospital in London who confirmed Beth had Amyloidosis.

The following Video Is a webinar (Internet Seminar) that I was part of, broadcast transmitted on (March 2015) it provides further knowlege on Amyloid production in the body.

Produced by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. (Duration 1hr)
